Overview
Introduction
This 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera, also known as the "911 Sculpture," is a unique art piece created by New York artist Daniel Arsham. The vehicle was disassembled, restored, and assembled during gallery exhibitions, featuring a bespoke Calcite Blue exterior and tri-blue leather interior. The 3.4L flat-six engine and 5-speed manual transmission have been rebuilt, and the car is equipped with color-matched Fuchs alloy wheels.
The Artistic Vision
Daniel Arsham's project, "Art is the Process," represents a convergence of automotive engineering and performance art. The 911 Sculpture was restored and reimagined with a signature Calcite Blue finish and customized interior details, such as recolored gauge faces. The reconstruction was performed live within a gallery environment, emphasizing the intrinsic value of manual labor and the creative journey.
Arsham's work challenges standard perceptions of design and utility, inviting the viewer to engage with the temporal and physical labor required to shape a complex machine. The intersection of craft and fine art highlights the beauty inherent in the process itself, redefining the automobile as a vessel for exploring time, labor, and the hidden aesthetics of engineering.
The Restoration Process
The 911 Sculpture began with an original 50,000-mile 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera, which was upgraded with a higher compression 3.4L factory engine setup. The cylinder heads were reconditioned, and all drivetrain hardware was restored. The suspension and brake system were also rebuilt, ensuring exceptional handling.
The interior features a tri-color full leather design, with even the smallest details covered in matching blue leather. The seats feature 959-inspired striping, and a unique gauge set was installed. A radio delete was performed, and a thermal barrier was installed behind the door panels to complete the interior.
Provenance and Condition
The 911 Sculpture was given the complete "Canepa Difference" process upon arrival, including a full mechanical inspection and cosmetic detailing. The underside was washed by hand, the paint polished using a multi-foam pad process, and the interior delicately cleaned. Mechanically, it was test-driven and inspected, and given a clean bill of health overall, making this rolling work of art ready to be enjoyed for the first time since Arsham completed it in 2023.
