Overview
Extremely complete and correct late-production Lusso with matching-numbers. Offered in the original colors, and with original books, tools, and documentation. 1964 Ferrari 250 GT Lussos/n 5817, engine no. 5817Celeste with Black Leather Interior History of the Ferrari LussoOften regarded as the best of the Ferrari 250 road cars, the 250 Lusso is widely regarded by many experts to be the most beautiful of the classic 250 series Ferraris. While its predecessor, the 250 PF, was restrained and elegant, the Lusso was dynamic and visually stunning. Lower and wider than earlier 250 series cars, the distinctive Kammtail rear treatment further modernized the design and significantly aided in high speed aerodynamic stability. Slotted between the larger 250 GTE 2+2 and the competition oriented SWB, the Lusso offered enthusiasts an athletic GT sports car with stunning visual presence and a civilized cockpit, delivering a dynamic driving experience – one that has become an icon of Ferrari excellence from the pinnacle of the Enzo era. In addition to the memorable Pininfarina coachwork, the Lusso was powered by Ferrari’s venerable and fully developed 3.0 liter outside plug Colombo V12 engine, the premier engineering iteration of this decade. Disc brakes were fitted all around while aluminum deck lids and doors were used to reduce overall weight. The interior was trimmed to high standards and featured centrally mounted tachometer and speedometer gauges, unique to the Lusso design. Production was relatively brief, from January of 1963 to August of 1964 with just 350 examples built, cementing its legacy as one of the most desirable Ferraris ever built. For collectors seeking the ultimate in aroad-going 250 GT V12 driving experience, the Lusso exemplifies Ferrari’s legendary 250 SWB in road-going form. Today the Lusso has become a blue-chip Ferrari not only for its desirable features and rarity, but for the exquisite beauty and performance combined in a superlatively singular car. History of Ferrari Lusso #5817This later production Ferrari Lusso is an exceptional example with known history since delivery to the first owner in California. Sold by the Ferrari concessionaire in San Francisco, California, Charles Rezzaghi, a resident of Los Angeles, became the first owner, subsequently retaining it for a remarkable 40 years until selling it in 2005. The second owner, also a resident of Southern California, sold it to the third owner (also in Los Angeles) in 2007. In 2011, the third owner commissioned a high-quality restoration which included a comprehensive engine rebuild by Allen Bishop, accompanied by mechanical work performed by Norbert Hofer’s Gran Touring Classics. Every aspect ofthe car was restored, though select areas of the original interior, which remained in excellent condition due to long-term collector original ownership, was thoughtfully preserved and conditioned to match the reupholstered areas. The fourth owner purchased this Lusso through Fantasy Junction in 2015 and retained it until consigning it once again to Fantasy Junction in 2023. In September 2023, while under prior ownership, Ferrari expert Patrick Ottis serviced the car including replacing the brake master cylinder piston seals, repairing the driver’s side window for better operation, adjusting and lubricating the hood release cable, carburetor cleaning including discharging nozzles and cleaning idle jets, installing new carburetor gaskets as needed, and replacing various spark wiring ends and spark wire boots as needed. In 2023, this Lusso was sold to the current owner, a notable 24 hours of Le Mans driver with two visits to the podium. Under current ownership, the owner has continued to preserve and maintain this Lusso as part of a notable collection of premium performance sports cars. Just as it has since purchased new, this Lusso retains a complete set of books, tools, tool roll, and jack along with original California ownership registration cards dating back to 1966 along with records documenting the restoration. Today this beautiful Lusso presents beautifully in every respect, reflecting the combined excellence of the professional restoration and ongoing preservation offered by the current and former owners.

Restored with just the right amount of attention to detail without being overdone, the finishes have mellowed only slightly since restoration efforts concluded. The metallic blue paint applied by Beckman Metalworks presents with the correct metallic micro-flake consistent for the era, excellent color, and lustrous gloss. The doors, hood, and trunk have excellent panel fit and closure. The exterior chrome, trim, and glass are excellent throughout including the lovely Marchal headlamps and fog lamps. A set of factory correct Borrani wire wheels and chrome plated knock offs are exceptionally nice including correct early series Michelin XVS tires, rather than the mistakenly mounted later series XWXs often incorrectly fitted to Lussos. The interior is a handsome combination of reupholstered features and original finishes. The black leather seating presents in excellent condition, and the curved bucket seats are correctly pleated in supple leather including correct corner seam stretching found on these dramatically contoured seats. The dashboard and instruments are very nice with excellent color and clarity. Overall, the interior is reflective of combined original and restored features capturing both long-term California ownership history and more recent correct restoration sensitively performed with preference towards preservation. Under the hood, the correct matching numbers engine bears the single strike number 5817 consistent with the serial number for this car. The engine delivers a handsome, settled finish, not overdone, or heavily glossed from over-restoration.
