Overview

Introduction

The 1981 Porsche 935 K4 is a rare and exceptional vehicle, with only two K4 chassis built by Kremer Racing. This particular car, K4/02, boasts a complete 100-point concours restoration by Canepa Motorsports and is driven by an 800+ horsepower 3.2-liter twin-turbo flat six engine, paired with a 4-speed manual transmission.

History and Provenance

The Porsche factory's shift in focus to prototype racing cars in the late 1970s led to the end of the factory Porsche 935. However, demand for the 935 remained, and teams like Kremer Racing continued to develop and produce their own upgraded chassis and bodywork. The Kremer Brothers, with their close relationship with the factory, built their first 935 variant, the K1, in 1976, and by 1981, they were ready to produce the K4, heavily influenced by the factory Moby Dick 935.

K4/02 was delivered to Interscope Racing, driven by Ted Field and Danny Ongais, during the 1981 IMSA season. The car was later acquired by Vasek Polak in 1983 and remained in storage until 1997. It was then prepared for historic racing and owned by Marshall Field, Ted Field's nephew, for a short period. In 2018, Canepa acquired the car and undertook a meticulous restoration to return it to its original 1981 specification.

Restoration and Specifications

Canepa's restoration of the K4 began with the disassembly and cataloging of all components to determine the best course of action. The original bodywork was removed, revealing the aluminum tube-frame chassis, and all components were restored or replaced as necessary. The 935 engine was completely rebuilt, resulting in an engine capable of 800+ horsepower. The suspension, brakes, and other mechanical systems were also addressed and restored.

The bodywork was completely gone over, with minute details fixed and the fiberglass bodywork made flawless. The car was primed and painted in Interscope Racing's iconic black, and the livery was meticulously researched and applied. The result is a stunning racecar that is both aggressive and menacing in appearance.

Conclusion

This 1981 Porsche 935 K4 is a rare and exceptional piece of automotive history, with only two examples ever made. Its historic lineage, combined with its exceptional performance and meticulous restoration, make it a truly unique opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts. With its 800+ horsepower and iconic Interscope Racing livery, this car is not to be missed.
