Overview
Introduction
The 1989 Porsche 962C, with VIN TS-962-89-002, is one of five bespoke carbon fiber composite monocoques built by Vern Schuppan. This car has a rich racing history, having participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Silverstone, Japan’s 1,000km of Fuji, and Autopolis. It is considered the top echelon of Porsche 962C variants, with a unique, high-downforce, one-of-one bodywork created by Dauer Racing.
Design and Development
In the late 1980s, teams began to develop bespoke ground-effect designs with upgraded drivetrains. Vern Schuppan, a Porsche race car driver and 24 Hour of Le Mans winner, created five racing chassis with a new monocoque made from carbon fiber. This innovative design allowed for incredible chassis stiffness while being lightweight, resulting in a better handling and more capable platform.
The carbon fiber monocoque, developed by Advanced Composites Technology, LTD., was designed with technical accuracy and pushed the boundaries of what a 962 chassis could do. The bodywork, created by Dauer Racing, took advantage of the increased structural performance of the monocoque, yielding an extremely potent design that utilized the increased power and carbon fiber chassis.
Racing History and Restoration
TS-962-89-002 participated in several races, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Silverstone, and the 1,000km of Fuji and Autopolis in Japan. After being sold to a Japan-based owner, it was later acquired by Bruce Canepa, who had a long history with the Porsche 962. Canepa Motorsports restored the car, ensuring every system, surface, and component was 100% and ready to race.
The restoration process involved disassembling the car, inspecting and rebuilding the engine, transaxle, and other mechanical systems. The bodywork was prepped and painted in its classic 'Canon' livery, and the bespoke carbon fiber monocoque was protected with a clear coat finish. The car was then campaigned at the 2017 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and has continued to participate in historic events.
Driving Experience
Driving the 962C is a unique experience, with the Schuppan carbon fiber chassis providing immense stiffness and enhancing handling and driving feedback. The bespoke Dauer high-downforce bodywork further enhances handling, resulting in a 962 performance and driving experience unlike any other. With its rich history, innovative design, and meticulous restoration, this 1989 Porsche 962C is a rare and exceptional vehicle.
