Overview
Introduction
The 1978 Chevrolet Camaro Trans Am Race Car, driven by Can-Am and Trans-Am champion George Follmer and IMSA GT Champion Brian Redman, is a rare and unique piece of motorsport history. With a 355 C.I.D Chevrolet V8 engine producing 550hp and a G-Force 4-speed manual transmission, this car is a formidable racing machine.
Racing History
This Camaro has a storied racing history, including a win at the 1981 Trans-Am Laguna Seca race with George Follmer behind the wheel. Originally purchased by Cooke-Woods Racing, the car was campaigned in Trans-Am by Ralph Kent-Cooke and later driven by Brian Redman and George Follmer. The car's most successful day came at Laguna Seca Raceway on October 11, 1981, where Follmer won the pole and led wire to wire, setting the fastest lap of the race.
The car was also driven by Emerson Fittipaldi, a two-time Formula One World Champion and Indy 500 winner, who finished 5th in its first race on October 15, 1978. Don Whittington also drove the car before it was sold to Cooke-Woods Racing in 1980.
IROC Series and Restoration
The IROC series, founded by Roger Penske, Les Richter, and Mike Phelps, was a unique and prestigious motorsport competition that brought together top drivers from various racing categories. The series used identically-prepared cars, including the Chevrolet Camaro, to level the playing field and determine the 'champion of champions'.
This Camaro, one of 19 built for the 1977 and 1978 IROC seasons, has been restored to its former glory by Ray Evernham Enterprises. With its original IROC documentation and a thorough restoration, this car is eligible for multiple historic racing events, including the inaugural 2025 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion IROC class.
Current Status and Eligibility
The 1978 Chevrolet Camaro Trans Am Race Car is now in restored condition, race-prepped by Ray Evernham Enterprises, and ready to be entered into the first inaugural IROC racing class at the 2025 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. This car represents a rare opportunity to own and compete with a piece of motorsport history, and its eligibility for multiple historic racing events makes it a valuable addition to any collection.
