Overview
Introduction
The 1966 Porsche 906, with VIN 906-137, is a rare and historic vehicle that was campaigned by notable drivers such as Jo Siffert, Jochen Rindt, Gerhard Mitter, Hans Herrmann, and Dieter Glemser. As a Werks Porsche team car, it participated in the first two races of 1966 and achieved two 2nd place OA finishes and one 3rd place OA finish. This car is one of only 65 examples built by Porsche and is considered the last of the street-legal race cars built by the manufacturer.
Design and Performance
The Porsche 906 boasted a nearly ground-up redesign, with a space-age tubular chassis and a bespoke fiberglass body. Weighing in at just 1,235 pounds, the Carrera 6 produced a stunning power-to-weight ratio, making it extremely competitive. The car was propelled by a 210-horsepower six-cylinder engine closely related to the 911R. With privateers behind the steering wheel, the Carrera 6 dominated world-class 2.0L endurance racing for two years, securing major victories in 1966, including Targa Florio, Paris Grand Prix, and class wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona, 12 Hours of Sebring, Spa, and Monza.
Racing History and Maintenance
This 1966 Porsche 906-137 was completed in April 1966 and was designated as a factory team car. It was entered into a series of races in 1966, including Spa 1,000km, Zeltweg 500km, Preis von Tirol (SP2.0), and Aspern (SRP). The car was later sold to Porsche Salzburg and was converted to a 'Berg Spyder' configuration. In 2016, the car underwent a complete engine rebuild, which included a new crankshaft, cylinders, and pistons, as well as rebuilt carburetors, main and rod bearings, and cylinder heads. The gearbox is a factory-correctly-numbered case and is period correct, but is not the original gearbox delivered with the car.
Provenance and Eligibility
Porsche 906-137 has been cherished by several caretakers and has been extensively maintained throughout its history. The car has been owned by a respected collector and historic race car driver for 13 years, during which time it has been regularly serviced and maintained. The car is eligible for historic automobile racing worldwide, including Monterey Historics, Le Mans Classic, and Porsche's Rennsport Reunion. With its unique racing history, limited production, and exceptional driving dynamics, this 1966 Porsche 906 is a racing legend for the race tracks or the streets.
