Overview
Introduction
Commissioned as a spiritual successor to the iconic California Kid β34 Ford, this 1934 Ford 3-Window Coupe was built by the legendary Pete Chapouris at SO-CAL Speed Shop. With a rich history, this vehicle boasts an original steel body and frame, with fabrication carried out by So-Cal senior fabricator Jimmy Shine.
Design and Features
The coupe features a Murano Red paint job, with pinstriper Dennis Rickleffs' contrasting black and white lines. It is equipped with a dropped axle, hairpins, Pete & Jake shocks, SO-CALβs Traditionalist disc brakes, and a Ford 9β rear end with coil-over shocks. The interior is adorned with a Gabe Lopez-stitched leather interior, featuring a crank-out windshield, crank-down rear window, heater, A/C, power side windows, and a 10-disc CD changer/radio with remote control.
The small block Chevy engine, built by Ray Zeller at Taylor Engine, is stroked to 383CI and estimated to produce over 400 horsepower. It is mated to a Turbo 350 automatic transmission, providing a smooth and powerful driving experience.
History and Provenance
The California Kid, a chopped, full-fendered β34 Ford 3-window coupe built by Pete Chapouris in the early 1970s, was a groundbreaking vehicle that landed on the cover of the November β73 issue of Rod & Custom magazine and starred in the movie The California Kid. Decades later, collector and enthusiast J.J. Barnhardt approached Pete with a proposition to build a second California Kid, this time with no budget constraints.
The search for the perfect candidate car led to the discovery of a primered, fenderless Highboy, which had been owned by the Chaputos family for years. The car was inspected, purchased, and delivered to SO-CAL Speed Shop, where Jimmy Shine and his team transformed it into a full-fendered car with steel fenders and running boards.
Condition and Availability
With only 4,139 miles since its construction, this 1934 Ford 3-Window Coupe remains in excellent condition, having undergone a thorough mechanical inspection, complete service, and concours-level detailing from top to bottom. It is now ready for its next owner to enjoy a legendary SO-CAL built hot rod, perfect for making memories while showcasing a flawless execution of a hot rod.
