Overview

Introduction

The 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL is a homologation model for BMW’s CSL race cars of the 1970s, with only 429 left-hand drive cars built in 1972. This particular model has been cosmetically and mechanically restored, with final interior completion in 2017 by Oldenzaal Classics.

Design and Performance

The 3.0 CSL features a lightweight, elegant design with a tactile feedback driving experience. It is equipped with a 3.0L fuel-injected inline six engine producing 200HP, 188 lb-ft of torque, and a 4-speed manual transmission. The 'L' in the name stands for 'leicht' (German for light), achieved through the use of thinner steel, deletion of soundproofing and trim, and aluminum alloy doors, hood, trunk lid, and Perspex side windows.

History and Provenance

This 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL was produced on November 28th, 1972, and first delivered to BMW importer Wolfgang Denzel Kraftfahrzeuge AG in Vienna, Austria on December 6th, 1972. The car has undergone a complete restoration by a German BMW E9 specialist, including a rebuilt matching-numbers engine and refinished Polaris Silver paint. The interior was restored by Oldenzaal Classics in 2017, with period-correct fabric and carpet.

Current Condition

Upon arriving at Canepa, the 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL was thoroughly inspected and detailed, with a foam pad polish to enhance the sheen of the restored Polaris Silver paint. The car was found to be in excellent condition, both cosmetically and mechanically, and is now ready for its new owner to take it home and enjoy the best of Bavarian Motor Group’s early 1970s offerings.
