Overview
Introduction
The 1972 Porsche 911E, with its VIN 9112200037, is the ultimate 'R Gruppe' 911. It features a 2.9-liter twin plug magnesium case air-cooled engine, producing 275 horsepower. This vehicle has undergone extensive restoration and performance modifications by renowned specialists, including Willhoit Auto Restoration and Scott's Independent.
History and Provenance
Originally ordered on March 9th, 1971, and completed on September 8th, this 911E was first owned by Staff Sargent Willie J. Small for 26 years. Small opted for the 911E with black leatherette and leather seats, USA-equipment, factory air conditioning, and a Blaupunkt 'Frankfurt' radio. The vehicle was well-serviced during Small's ownership, with numerous records and maintenance documents to show for it.
In 1999, the 911E was sold to Carl Akins, who commissioned a meticulous restoration by Willhoit Auto Restoration. The restoration took over two years to complete and resulted in a bespoke, world-class 'R-gruppe' outlaw Porsche 911.
Restoration and Modifications
The restoration process involved stripping the vehicle down to its hardware, cleaning and prepping the tub, and respraying it with the original Tangerine orange color. The interior was upgraded with leather and new carpet, while the rear seats were removed to save weight.
Mechanical modifications included a NOS Porsche 911 magnesium crankcase, custom Carillo connecting rods, Mahle 2.9-liter lightweight pistons and cylinders, and a custom rebuilt mechanical fuel injection pump. The engine produces 275 naturally aspirated horsepower, almost doubling the original output. The suspension and braking systems were also upgraded to harness the increased power.
Current Condition and Ownership
The 911E has had several owners since its restoration, including Bruce Canepa, who added subtle modifications, and Dick Moran, a well-known Porsche collector, who installed Recaro sport seats and upgraded the wheels and tires.
Currently showing 10,044 miles since restoration, the vehicle is in concours condition, with a pristine paint finish and a beautifully appointed interior. The engine and mechanical components are in excellent working order, making this 911E a driver's car that is sure to delight any Porsche enthusiast.
