Overview
Introduction
The 1951 Jaguar Mk V 3.5L Drophead Coupe is a stunning example of a high-point restoration, upgraded for modern use with a 5-speed transmission. This rare and desirable car boasts an incredible presence and great value.
History and Provenance
This Mark V is one of the last of the 577 3.5L Drop Head Coupes built and one of just 57 examples assembled after chassis 647001. The car's history is well-documented, with ownership tracing back to its delivery to Hoffman Motors in NYC in 1951. The third owner, who possessed the car from 1968-2016, undertook a comprehensive restoration, which was completed in 2011. The car has since been driven approximately 3,000 miles and has been shown at local events, including a feature on the cover of JAGazette Magazine in 2023.
The car's restoration was meticulous, with attention to authenticity and detail. Upgrades include a larger capacity radiator, Pertronix distributor, high-output ignition coil, stainless steel exhaust, and a 5-speed T5 manual transmission. The car comes with detailed documentation, including handwritten notes on service and maintenance, as well as information on recommended fluid requirements and adjustments.
Condition and Features
Today, this beautiful Mk V presents in excellent condition, with high-quality finishes and mechanical details. The exterior features excellent paint and chrome, with a high gloss and luster that has been retained since the restoration. The panel fit is very nice throughout, and the three-position landau bar convertible configuration adds to the elegance of this classic Jaguar design.
The interior is equally impressive, with leather surfaces in excellent condition, including the contoured front bucket seats and rear bench seat. The fit and finish are remarkably fine, from the carpets to the door panels, with proper stitching and attention to detail. The opulent burled wood dashboard and surrounding door trim are very nicely finished, with excellent fit and delicate touches of chrome detail.
Driving Experience and Accompaniments
The car starts easily and idles smoothly, with a gentle idle and progressive power to upper revs. The clutch engages properly, and all gears operate smoothly from first to fifth gear. The driving experience is delightfully sporty and fittingly luxuriant, making this car beautifully prepared for participation in any Jaguar club gathering or concours event.
The car is accompanied by a car cover and storage bag, as well as a black top boot. With its impressive presence, elegant design, and meticulous restoration, this 1951 Jaguar Mk V 3.5L Drophead Coupe is sure to delight the next fortunate owner with a motoring experience only a vintage Jaguar can deliver.
