Overview
Introduction
The 1965 Shelby Mustang GT350 is a rare and iconic vehicle, with only 562 examples produced by Shelby American. This particular car, chassis number SFM5S110, is the 110th car built by Shelby American and boasts a concours-level restoration by marque specialist Randy Roberts of Muscle Car Restorations.
History and Provenance
The Shelby GT350 was born out of Ford's attempt to have the new Mustang accepted by the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA). After meeting with SCCA Executive Director John Bishop, Carroll Shelby was tasked with building a minimum of 100 units to meet the SCCA requirements. This car was shipped to Shelby American in Los Angeles, where it was transformed and completed on April 26, 1965. It was then sold to its first owner, Greg Palmer, who planned to take the car drag racing and installed drag race ladder bars and a Boss 302 engine.
The car went on to successfully compete at California drag racing venues, including Lions, Orange County, and Irwindale, before being sold and passing through the hands of two California owners. It was later purchased by a private collector in Oklahoma, who commissioned a full concours-correct restoration to the highest standards.
Restoration and Specifications
The restoration of SFM5S110 was a ground-up, nut-and-bolt process that included sourcing an original replacement date-code-correct K-code 289 engine and aluminum Borg-Warner T-10 4-speed transmission. All sheet metal was restored using genuine Ford panels where needed, and the car was finished to National Concours judging standards. The interior features beautiful Ray Brown seat belts and a correct early slotted 15” steering wheel, while the exterior is presented in Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue Le Mans stripes.
The car sits on Shelby's Cragar 15” wheels fitted with Goodyear Blue Dot 7.75x15 tires, with a fifth fitted in the rear package tray. The engine has been tuned to perfection, and the entire drivetrain has been checked for balance and alignment through a series of test drives.
Current Condition and Availability
Presented in like-new showroom condition, this GT350 is ready for any show field or driven event. The car has been given a comprehensive inspection and concours-level multi-foam pad polishing and cleaning of all surfaces, enhancing the already-present lustre of the paint and interior. With its rich history, impeccable restoration, and rare specifications, this 1965 Shelby GT350 is a truly unique opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts alike.
