Overview
Introduction
This 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Re-creation is a stunning example of craftsmanship, with a six Weber engine, gorgeous body lines, and accurate details that make it difficult to distinguish from the original. Built on a 250GTE #3121 chassis, this re-creation embodies the essence of the iconic Ferrari 250 GTO, widely considered the best all-around sports car of the 20th century.
History and Provenance
The build began in 2008 by highly experienced craftsman and Ferrari expert, Steven Giacobbi, who utilized a Ferrari 250 GTE as the basis for construction. Giacobbi's expertise and artisanal craftsmanship are evident throughout the vehicle, from the mechanical systems to the alloy body construction. The body was formed using a buck created for repairs to an original GTO, ensuring accurate capture of the original design and dimensions.
The engine was rebuilt with higher compression pistons and larger exhaust valves, producing 300hp. The transmission features a clever solution, with a former Motion Products mechanic reconfiguring an original 250 case to fit 5-speed Tremec gears while retaining the visual exterior features and castings of the original gearbox.
Specifications and Features
This Ferrari GTO re-creation boasts a range of special mechanical features and thoughtful improvements, including a custom-mounted aluminum radiator, a nine-quart oil sump, and a front-mounted oil cooler. The interior is constructed with authenticity in mind, featuring modern seat belts, a fully integrated roll bar, and improved instrumentation.
The vehicle has undergone extensive servicing, including rebuilding the water pump, installing new venturis and chokes, and testing the distributors. The engine compression was tested, recording 170 psi for all 12 cylinders. New Michelin 225/70 VR15 XWX tires were installed, and the hubs were greased. The rear exhaust section was removed, and silent-block bushings were replaced.
Condition and Presentation
Today, this beautiful Ferrari GTO re-creation presents in superb condition throughout, with correct Ferrari components and striking alloy coachwork. The build quality and attention to detail are captured in every aspect, from the exceptional Ferrari red finish to the accurate and correctly finished design elements, including chrome-trimmed headlight covers, correct headlamps, and gorgeous fastback lines.
The vehicle is complete with correctly finished 15” Borrani wire wheels and Michelin XWX tires, fronting four-wheel disc brakes, and finished with single hub chrome-plated triple-eared knockoffs. This re-creation is a testament to the passion and expertise of its builder, offering an enthusiast the opportunity to experience the pinnacle of Enzo-era Ferrari.
